In this lesson, Trevor discusses how using international standard systems for river signals can help boaters communicate more effectively on the river. This lesson will discuss some of the basic concepts of river communication and some of the most common signals you are likely to see on the river. Specifically, we will be focusing on:
You and Me
I am OK
Yes / Acknowledged / OK / Ready
No / Negative / Cancel That
Directional Indicators (Left & Right)
Swimmer
Eddy Out
Lost Paddle
Keep Going
Set Safety
First Aid Needed
It is important to note that you will often encounter specific regional differences with signals and you may see signals that you don’t understand. Sometimes groups of boaters in different areas will add new signals to their repertoire or just find those useful for their specific region. The most important thing is to try to understand what they are saying or attempting to communicate to you. If you are boating with a new group in a new area feel free to ask them what signals they use to indicate certain things.
